A new furnace or heat pump works best in a house that holds its heat. Insulation and windows are often the cheapest way to cut gas bills, and they can shrink the size, and price, of the heating system you need.
Envelope and ventilation rebates
| Upgrade | Income-qualified rebate (FortisBC) |
|---|---|
| Windows and doors | Up to $750 each, maximum $7,500. U-factor ≤ 1.22 |
| Attic insulation | $0.05 × sq ft × R-value added (at least R12 added), up to $2,000 |
| Exterior wall cavities | $0.20 × sq ft × R-value added (at least R12 added), up to $2,000 |
| Basement or crawlspace walls | $0.20 × sq ft × R-value added (at least R10 added), up to $2,000 |
| Bathroom fans | Up to $1,200 per ENERGY STAR system ducted outside, up to $2,400 |
| Connected thermostat | Up to $200 (announced Oct 15, 2026; confirm before relying) |
Worked example: attic insulation
An income-qualified household tops up a 900 sq ft attic from R12 to R50, adding R38. The rebate is 900 × 38 × $0.05 = $1,710, under the $2,000 cap for that area.
Why bathroom fans are on the list
As a house gets tighter, moisture from showers needs a reliable way out, or it ends up on windows and in walls. FortisBC’s income-qualified ventilation rebate pays for ENERGY STAR bathroom fans ducted to the outside. Note that it doesn’t count toward the two-upgrade bonus.
Requirements to watch
- Windows and doors must have a U-factor of 1.22 or lower.
- Insulation must add at least the minimum R-value for that area, using products with Canadian R-values.
- Keep invoices showing square footage, R-values and product details; before-and-after photos help.
- Two qualifying upgrades can unlock the $350 two-upgrade bonus for income-qualified homes.
How ROMA helps with the insulation, window and ventilation rebates
ROMA has replaced gas furnaces, boilers and water heaters in Greater Vancouver homes since 1999, from Vancouver Specials with basement suites to heritage houses on radiators. When you call about the insulation, window and ventilation rebates, a licensed technician starts with the facts that decide eligibility: the age on the rating plate, what fuel heats the house, whether it’s your primary home, and whether the household may be income-qualified.
You get a plain answer about which rebate fits and what it should pay, and a free, flat-rate estimate on qualifying equipment if you want one. Where a program needs an HPCN-listed contractor, we show you how to check any installer on the HPCN directory before you book. Phone (604) 704-0300 or email info@romaheating.ca.
